About Construction Systems
In support of the Minnetonka School Board goals, the District has engaged in a careful exploration of student interests, future workforce preparedness, and potential post-secondary opportunities in the skilled trades. As part of this initiative, Minnetonka has noted that the demand for skilled construction professionals is building. Recent data indicates the industry will need to attract nearly half a million new workers in the next year alone to meet growing demand.
Minnetonka High School's Construction Systems Program, part of the MOMENTUM design and skilled trades program, is dedicated to preparing today’s students for the essential careers of tomorrow. Our program offers students a unique opportunity to explore and excel in various fields, from residential carpentry and electrical work to architectural design and structural engineering.
Preparing for Construction Careers
At Minnetonka High School, we are committed to equipping our students with the skills and knowledge they need to excel in this growing field. Our comprehensive curriculum pairs Mathematics in Home Renovation and Physics in Home Renovation, ensuring students understand the scientific principles behind their craftsmanship. This hands-on training ensures students are well-prepared to step into a variety of roles, such as:
- Construction Manager: Overseeing projects from start to finish, coordinating subcontractors, budgets, and timelines.
- Architect / Structural Engineer: Designing residential homes, commercial buildings, and the structural systems that support them.
- Heavy Equipment Operator: Managing complex machinery for excavation, grading, and site preparation.
- Project Superintendent: Coordinating on-site operations to maintain safety, quality, and workflow efficiency.
- Skilled Tradesperson: Performing specialized craftsmanship as a carpenter, electrician, plumber, or HVAC technician.
- Civil Infrastructure: Serving in public works or engineering roles to build the roads, bridges, and systems that connect our communities.

Cutting-Edge Technology & Innovative Experiences
At the heart of Minnetonka's Construction Systems Program, based out of MOMENTUM's Maker Bay, are professional-grade tools and outstanding internal and external experiences. Our program features a state-of-the-art construction lab that replicates real-world job sites, enhancing both the learning and enjoyment of building. We also offer comprehensive training in modern industry technologies, where students can gain practical experience with architectural software and laser layout tools.
Minnetonka High School collaborates with a wide range of industry professionals and local contractors to afford students unique, hands-on experiences. One example of these collaborative efforts is our Bidding Challenge project. These on-site learning opportunities allow students to experience the satisfaction of construction firsthand. Under the guidance of experienced instructors and trade partners, students take concepts from blueprints to reality, learning essential framing, finishing, and systems installation techniques.
Vision for the Future
Our vision at Minnetonka High School is to be at the forefront of skilled trades education. With interest in the trades growing rapidly, we are actively working to expand community relationships for the benefit of our students. As we look to the future, we plan to continue integrating cutting-edge technologies and methodologies into our ever-growing curriculum.
These Construction Systems courses take place in the MOMENTUM Maker Bay, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities designed to enhance learning and provide real-world applications of construction theory. By bridging the gap between the classroom and the job site, we are preparing students not just for careers in construction, but for thoughtful engagement with the built world around them.
